Today Is World Refugee Day 2013

ref·u·gee  : A person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.

World Refugee Day is a day that is observed every year on June 20. It was established by the United Nations to honor the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.

This year, the United Nations have reported that refugee numbers worldwide are at an all time high with over 45 million people being displaced. The recent Syrian conflict can be attributed as a major factor in this increase.

Ways in which you can help

Despite having found protection in United Nations refugee camps, there is still a lack adequate food, water, shelter, and education. UNHCR’s goal is to bring attention to this issue. Spreading the world by tweeting and posting on Facebook, attending World Refugee events, and donating to UNHCR all helps to raise awareness.
