Afropop Worldwide is a radio program and online magazine dedicated to music from Africa and the African Diaspora. NPR launched Afropop back in 1988 as a weekly series hosted by Cameroonian broadcaster Georges Collinet. The show introduced American audiences to the sounds of now-legendary artists: Youssou N’Dour, Angelique Kidjo, Salif Keita, Hakim, Khaled, Chico Science, Cesaria Évora, Thomas Mapfumo, Oumou Sangare, and many others.
Afropop’s web site—afropop.org—launched in 1997, was one of the first websites on African music and one of the first for any public radio program. The award-winning site now offers original audio, the Hip Deep series, video, a rich blog, and the most extensive archive on African music to be found on the web.
