‘Africa on My Sleeve’ is a new event that will debut in New Zealand in October.
This event is the first of its kind as event founder Makanaka Tuwe realized. She saw the lack of visibility of African art and fashion in New Zealand and states “Its time to raise awareness about African inspired fashion and art in New Zealand.International designers and fashion houses such as Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Gucci and Burberry have embraced Africa in their designs.
Tuwe hopes that ‘Africa on my Sleeve’ will be the catalyst New Zealand needs to showcase and promote multicultural art. The event will feature four local African designers: Chipo Chiyangwa, award winners Maureen Chimwayange and Nomsa Botshiwe and Portia Muumbe.
‘Africa on my Sleeve’ will also showcase the work of New Zealand born Boutique-owner Lucy-Mae Goffe-Robertson and Thai born Lucie Sutichinta .
The debut show hopes to fuse elements of a fashion show with an art exhibition to give guest a chance to experience the African creative class. The art exhibition will feature batik paintings, canvas paintings and traditional artifacts sourced from Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Morocco and Egypt.
