British artist King Charles (born Charles Costa) has just written and released a tribute single to the late South African leader Nelson Mandela. “Lov Madiba” pays homage to the legacy of Mandela and features fellow British artists Katie Melua and Shingai Shoniwa of the Noisettes. All funds raised from the album will go to help the Nelson Mandela’s Children Fund in South African.
Though King Charles in was born and raised in West London, he grew up in a generation that was heavily influence by apartheid and so has a deep appreciation for Mandela’s struggle. His father was a former South African activist. He states, “Nelson Mandela has always been very close to my heart because my father was born and bred in the South African farmland, was at school during Mandela’s trial and became very active at University of the Witwatersrand as president of the student union in staunch opposition to the ruling apartheid regime.”
This is the first release of the newly-formed record label The Cherry Party, a venture with Sony Music.
