Earlier this year, British fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner, showcased some of her pieces during a live catwalk presentation for the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Fashion in Motion series. The show featured pieces from her past collections that explore black masculinity with aspects of gender-defiance. In the video produced for Fashion in Motion (below), she states her desire to intercept between cultures to create something new.
Born in south-east London to an English mother and Jamaican father, Wales Bonner’s designs explore cross cultural hybridity, masculinity and notions of European and African luxury fashion.
Her inspiration comes from black visual culture in relation to African craft.
Inspired by exoticism and 19th-century depictions of black men, the collection featured crushed velvet embellished with cowrie shells and Swarovski crystals, high waisted flares, jewelled skull caps and intricate neckpieces.
