57-year old Susanne du Toit was announced as the 2013 winner of the BP Portrait Award last Night. South African artist Du Toit, who is based in Berkshire submitted an image she painted of her eldest son 35 year old ‘Pieter’.
‘The painter gave her son the freedom to find his own pose. The only condition was that his hands should feature prominently because hands are ‘essential to communicating personality’.’
Ms Du Toit was educated at the University of Pretoria and then the Massachusetts college of Art in Boston. Du Toit’s painting can be seen at the National Portrait Gallery from Thursday 20 June when the BP Portrait Award 2013 exhibition opens to the public at the National Portrait Gallery until 15 September. Admission is free.
