Saturday October 26, 2013 will mark the beginning for Africa Fashion Week Melbourne. This is the first of its kind in Australia’ and comes at a much needed time; Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city and has in the recent years become home to a growing diverse and multicultural population.
The event was founded by former Miss Uganda USA Imat Akelo-Opio. She hopes that this event will provide a platform for both African and African-inspired designers in Australia and hopefully put Melbourne on the map as the go-to place for unique and exquisite African fashions.
Under the moniker “Africa Arise”, Akelo-Opio’s organisation Otino International hopes to raise funds for medical services in northern Uganda, a region struggling to recover from years of internal strife.
