’12 Years a Slave’ tells the true story of highly educated Upstate New York resident Solomon Northup, who in 1841 was ‘captured and sold’ into slavery, where he was subjected to twelve years of unspeakable inhumanity.
In an interview with Rolling Out, British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor who plays main character Northup states, “It was a real privilege to bring Solomon and the other people on the film, to bring them to life. It’s just a remarkable experience … and the greatest working experience that I’ve ever had.”
Recent Yale School graduate Nyong’o who plays Patsey in the movie tells Rolling Out, “I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be a part of this type of project of this magnitude right after graduating from drama school. So it has been a gift all the way around,” “It was a real privilege to be a part of history personally. I have learned so much through this process I would otherwise just not know.”
