In a new editorial titled ‘American Beauty’, Summary Magazine defied the stereotypical view of Western beauty by featuring dark skinned beauty Akuol de Mabior.
The editorial was shot by New York based photographer Joshua Petka and shows the Sudanese model (currently signed to Wilhemina) wearing a range of colorful clothing from Derek Lam, Calvin Klein and Neiman Marcus. She also dons elaborate jewelry from Atelier Swarovski. The red backdrop invokes power and allows us to enjoy the play on color which compliments Akuol’s skin exquisitely. The 6-page feature begins with a brief introduction which states: ‘We crowned Beyoncé our queen while Kerry Washington rules our prime time and Lupita Nyongo is all things fashion and beauty to us…is there a new standard for the American Beauty in town.
