The Cannes 2014 Film Festival kicked off on Wednesday and one of the movies gaining rave reviews is Bande de Filles (Girlhood), Celine Sciamma’s gritty new coming of age tale that focuses around a group of teens from a poor neighborhood in Paris.

Sciamma inspiration for the movie came from a group of girls that she would see around the Paris Metro area.

In an interview with Screendaily, Sciamma says, “I was fascinated by their energy, their group dynamics, their attitude, style and way of dressing…I wanted to find out more about them,” “They’re not gangs in the US sense of the word; just big groups of friends…”

Sciamma’s movies all have a common theme of exploring adolescent growing pains experienced by teens/pre-teens in Paris.

She explains, “They face a particular set of challenges but at the same their stories are consistent with the themes I’ve explored in my other work such as the construction of feminine identity and friendships between girls… the film is basically a coming-of-age tale.”

The movie stars Karidja Touré, Assa Sylia, Lindsay Karamoh, Mariétou Touré, Idrissa Diabaté, Cyril Mendy and Djibril Gueye.
