PHOTOGRAPHY: ‘Colored Only’ by Hélène Jayet

Sep 29, 2014 • Art, Articles, MaliNo Comments

‘Colored Only’ is an ongoing photography project by Malian photographer Hélène Jayet. The photo series is focused on her fascination with the African diaspora and their ties with Paris.

All portraits were taken at Château d’eau Street in the tenth arrondissement of Paris, a multiculturally diverse and eclectic neighborhood in the French capital that is renowned for being the epicenter of African hair braiding shops.

Jayet began the project in 2009 with an aim to focus on on the most boldest of hairstyles. She was drawn to the iconic photography of Nigerian photographer J.D “Okhai Ojeikere and African American visual artist Lorna Simpson, both of which serve as inspiration for this project.
