pretty.periodPretty. Period. is a new website dedicated to showcasing the beauty of women of color. Described as ‘a visual tribute to Brown Skin’, the site is the brainchild of (1)ne Drop: Shifting the Lens on Race author, Dr Yaba Blay.

Dr Blay is an educator, that has spent several years researching colorism and global skin color politics. She has served as a Consulting Producer for CNN Black in America and is an advocate against skin bleaching.

I’ve spent many years researching and writing about Black body politics, particularly as it relates to skin tone i.e. colorism and skin color politics. For the most part, when we talk about skin color politics, we focus primarily on the sociopolitical DISadvantages that come with being dark-skinned in a society that continues to privilege and prioritize White/Western standards of beauty.’

Blay is working with featured photographers to provide beautiful editorials that will inspire and empower. Readers are also encouraged to submit their images in support of the movement.
