Allen’s autobiography is based on several hours of interviews with musician and scholar Michael E. Veal. The book detail’s Allen’s life from his early years in Lagos; his work as Fela Kuti’s supremely talented sideman; his struggles to form his own bands in Nigeria; his emigration to France in 1985 and his current life touring the globe and collaborating with musicians from King Sunny Adé to Ginger Baker to Damon Albarn.

Author Michael E. Veal is a musician and Professor of Music and African American Studies at Yale University. In 2000, he authored Fela: The Life and Times of an African Musical Icon.
