African-Australian Movie: Daniel Okoduwa’s ‘Gossip Nation’

Aug 13, 2013 • EntertainmentNo Comments

If you grew up in the UK, you are probably familiar with Australian exports ‘Neighbours’ and ‘Home and Away’. These soap operas were big in the UK with huge followings. One problem with these shows were the misrepresentations of ethnic groups. Award-winning producer Daniel Okoduwa’s 2012 film, Gossip Nation exposes us to a Nigerian-Australian community based in West Syndey, Blacktown. When this movie first came out, it made history as the first Afro-Australian movie to premiere in major Australian cinemas.

‘Gossip Nation’ is a drama that tells the story of Blacktown’s growing African community and how jealousy and tragedy haunt the characters as their lives are tainted with gossip.

The movie will be available next week on DVD across Australia (August 22, 2013) but for those of us that are not in Australia, the movie is available on with a plus subscription.
