Calling all African Designers for the Design Indaba Expo 2014

img4010One of Africa’s most prestigious design competitions Design Indaba, is searching for designers and innovators around the continent to showcase at its 2014 Expo. The competition is also opened to designers outside of Africa whose work focuses on ‘delivering solutions to African environments’.

The event which is being held in Cape Town from Friday, February 28 to March 2, 2014 ‘is the largest exhibition of design on the African continent’, and this will be the first year that the organizers are looking beyond the South African borders to showcase work from other African countries.

Designers in the following categories are being considered:

  • Urban planning
  • Fashion
  • Textile design
  • Furniture and décor
  • Handmade crafts
  • Visual arts and photography
  • Graphic design
  • Video, film and animation
  • Sustainable design (high- and low-tech)
  • Industrial design and innovation in any industry – e.g. automotive, engineering, pharmaceutical, agriculture, telecommunications, information technology
  • Technological innovations of any kind
  • Informal inventions/street solutions
    (We regret this exhibition does not include music, dance or the performing arts)

Selection criteria

In all the above fields, Design Indaba will be looking for designs, products, objects, inventions and ideas that break with tradition and represent a fresh direction and new mode of expression.

Designers Tom Dixon, Bibi Seck and Ayse Birsel; fashion designer Ozwald Boateng; architects David Adjaye and Kunle Adeyemi; Financial Times writer Lucia van der Post will will amongst the panel of advisors.
