Lakwena Maciver: A little bit of Africa on every street corner (Design Indaba)

karibuLakwena MacIver was one of the artists that showcased at this years Africa Calling in London’s Southbank. The British-born contemporary artist, employs the use bold colours and typography in her work to communicate her African heritage.

Maciver visited family’s home in Uganda for the first time as an adult and her installation for the exhibition is bred out of this experience. During her trip she snapped photos of patterned minibus taxis and the intricate grille work on building facades.

In the video, Maciver explains her work aesthetic and her use of colourful graphics and text, ‘I think culturally thats what really interests me, the ideal the you can… even without a language you can communicate culture just through color and pattern.
